Former World Heavyweight Champion Frank Bruno remains one of the nation’s most beloved sporting figures, celebrated for his warm personality, charm and infectious enthusiasm.
A leading force in British boxing since the early 1980s, Frank enjoyed an outstanding career in the ring before becoming a popular media personality. In recent years, he has also been widely respected for his openness in discussing the mental health challenges he faced following his boxing career, inspiring many with his honesty and resilience.
Turning professional at just 21, Frank quickly built a reputation as one of the most exciting heavyweights of his era, with a string of early knockout victories. Known for his devastating punching power, he captured the European Heavyweight title in 1985 with a knockout win. Boxing at the highest level demanded not only immense physical strength but also exceptional mental toughness, as Frank endured gruelling training regimes and faced some of the world’s greatest fighters.
Throughout his career, Frank challenged for the World Heavyweight title on three occasions against Tim Witherspoon, Mike Tyson, and Oliver McCall. Demonstrating incredible determination, he overcame setbacks and, in 1995, achieved his ultimate goal by defeating McCall to become World Heavyweight Champion. Over the course of his career, Frank secured 40 victories from 45 fights, with an impressive 38 wins by knockout — a true testament to his power and skill.
